If you consider putting into practice a form of home made hydroponics, investigate the various systems and make a choice that best suits you and your intentions. Home made hydroponics are not (for most people) difficult to build and do not have to be expensive either. Each type of system comes with its own set of pros and cons; and each can help you towards your wishes.
Regardless of which system you choose specifically, each one has some common requirements. You will need an external pump, tubing, waterproof bins, StyroFoam and air stones (if you choose the water culture method), mesh pots, plant trays, a growing medium, hydroponic nutrients, and a sharp cutting tool.
A home made hydroponics system should be built by an adult, not by children because of the need for cutting and also for the detailed building requirements. Children, however, may take great interest in the system and watching it progress; home made hydroponics provide a small growing environment to nurture and enjoy.
In terms of placement in your home/work area, you will want to look for a space that is not well lit. Light on your system can encourage the growth of algae, which would not be good for your plants. And, you will want to look for a space that allows you to grow your plants on stable surfaces so as to ensure even plant growth.
A list of home made systems include: flood and drain (ebb and flow), hand watering method, nutrient film technique (NFT), deep water culture (DWC), a wick system, and a few others. The hand watering method is said to be the least expensive and most low maintenance system to use.
Along with choosing a system, you’ll want to consider the number of plants that you would like to grow that suits the size of garden you plan to tend. As you plant, space each individual plants in a way that allows them to receive enough light.
It’s okay to think small in this case. Home made hydroponics are not meant for large scale planting or for commercial use. The systems are intended more for your own enjoyment and benefit.
