Are curious to learn about how to grow with hydroponics? Your interest may be based in curiosity or in somewhat of an agricultural challenge. Or perhaps you want to learn how to grow with hydroponics because your living conditions do not allow for the typical soil-based garden.
Hydroponics is a great way to enjoy the plants you love. Plants don’t need soil; they need the nutrients found in the soil. So, by providing the nutrients through a water reservoir or other soil-less medium, you can grow quite beautiful and healthy plants.
Choose a place where your plants will not get too much light (as light encourages algae growth), air, and a comfortable temperature. Next, choose a hydroponic system that suits your chosen area in terms of size. You will either purchase one or build one yourself.
Then, you may want to investigate the quality of the water that you will be using. If you are not satisfied with the quality, use bottled spring water for your plants, or perhaps treat your water with hydrogen peroxide before continuing.
Next, how will you feed your plants? They need nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorous. They also need calcium, magnesium, sulfur, and iron. You may choose to feed your plants with a professionally made product. The advantage of that would be that it is already mixed correctly.
If you choose not to use professionally manufactured fertilizers, you can make homemade versions or you can feed your plants organic food. All such choices depend on your goals for your hydroponic growing.
Regardless of which nutrient option you decide upon, you will also want to keep the pH balance right. If it is not at an appropriate level, it may inhibit the plants from receiving the nutrients. The pH level must be monitored regularly as it can fluctuate and tends to rise, so adjusting it to the lower end is sometimes a good strategy.
Finally, remember that practice makes perfect. If things are not going perfectly at first, experts suggest that you make small singular changes; changing “everything” at once prohibits you from learning what change was actually needed. Tweak a little here and a little here, and soon you’ll be growing with hydroponics.
